THE NEW YORK TIMES: Think of It as the Jersey Shore in a Can By MELISSA MEISEL
Spring has finally escaped the cold claws of March. And the sun worshipers are optimistically baring stomachs and flaunting calves, even at the cost of a few goose bumps. But what about those who crave a place in the sun -- or at least the look -- but flinch at the thought of potentially lethal UV rays?
Melissa Simon has a solution: airbrush tanning. Ms. Simon jettisoned a corporate career to start Jersey Girl Tan, a Closter-based online company, a year ago. Jersey Girl is aimed at landlocked beach bums who pine for golden radiance without the radiation. You may not be able to afford that place at the Shore, but Jersey Girl Tan can make it look as if you can.
Ms. Simon's dihydroxyacetone-based ''tan in a can'' pledges summer color below the cost of tanning salons. Bronze Infusion Instant Self-Tanning Aerosol Spray (8 ounces, $29) is her best seller; the company also offers gift sets with names like Meet Me at the Mall and Not Just for Jersey Girls.
Most of its sales are online, but the products are also starting to appear in boutiques in New Jersey and nationwide.Leaving the corporate world and starting Jersey Girl Tan, at www.jerseygirltan.com, was daunting, Ms. Simon said. ''I had a lot to learn about online marketing and the cosmetic industry,'' she said. ''Most of it was trial and error. As an indie cosmetic brand, you need to approach the market much differently than if you were a Fortune 500 company. You don't have the luxury of a big budget or the resources, so you need to find other ways to create a buzz.''
A year later, Ms. Simon says that Jersey Girl Tan has a small but loyal customer base and is preparing a new product, Shimmer Dimmer. It's designed to reduce telltale self-tan shading -- oh, the shame! -- in places like palms and feet.
